A somewhat disappointing sophomore effort by Meirelles, Constant Gardener takes the personal horror of the exploitation of the third world and ties it to a touching but rather staid and convoluted tragic love story. Fiennes and Weisz both give amazing performances as their respective characters, but for one important detail: the audience is never given any reason for them to like each other. Since it is established that Justin is a cold bastard, his motivation to change into a caring risk-taker by the end of the film is presumably his love for Tessa. However, because the couple was so unbelievable to start with, Justin just seems to be doing everything out of character, trying to fill the void she has left. In addition, once he enters Tessa's world, there is far too much heavy-handed moralizing, coupled with several out-of-place deus ex machina scenes where big conspiracies are uncovered. The ending, too, leaves something of a bad taste; there is a satisfying short-term resolution, but the sacrifices of the characters defy explanation in some ways. The scenes that make Gardener better than most of what's out there were the personal dramas of those being taken advantage of – touches of neorealism echo through the Kenyan villages, before we get caught up in the complex adventures of the main characters. Unfortunately, Meirelles looked for the bigger picture in the technical political situation, and not enough in the souls of the people he was talking about.
